RE: Covering the cap of a 5th wheel

Thanks everone for the replys. I am unable to put the trailer into the storage so the rear is exposed so that is not an option. The Saran Wrap is a thought but it will only keep the rain off of the trailer. It would still be exposed to the sun. I am still open to other options. Thanks again

Covering the cap of a 5th wheel

Hello, We have recently purchased a new Jayco Designer 5th wheel and after much looking we have been able to find a covered storage space. The problem is the trailer is about 4 feet longer than the cover so the cap is exposed to the elements. I have searched this and other forums and the general feeling is that it is better to not use a cover due to the damages they cause. So I have been looking at options to protect the cap but I am having little luck. I have considered getting a 15 X 20 foot tarp and having someone sew foam on one side of the tarp so that there would be a soft pad between the tarp and the trailer. I would appreciate your opinion on this thought. I am also very open for any other suggestions. This forum has been a great source of information and I hope that some of you will be kind enough to reply. Thanks in advance.

RE: Shreveport, LA to Austin, TX

Thanks for the replys but again my main concern is locating diesel fuel stops that will accomodate a large fifth wheel. Charlie

Shreveport, LA to Austin, TX

Hello, We have driven from Shreveport to Austin many times by traveling I-20 west from Shreveport to I-35, just east of Dallas, then taking 35 south to Austin. We took our 5th wheel last time and there was a great deal of construction for most of the way on 35. I am considering either taking I-20 west to Marshall then taking Hwy 79 to Round Rock or taking I-20 west to Tyler then taking Hwy 31 to Waco. We have gone both of these routes before but never pulling a trailer. My concern is finding places to buy diesel. Has anyone ever taken either of these routes while pulling a big trailer. We are too tall to get into regular service stations and I really don't like the idea of having to drop the trailer to fuel up. Thanks for the advice.

fordsooperdootydieselsmoker, Did you use flat or gloss paint? Did you use a primer? Thanks

Paint for hitch

Hello, We purchased a Pulrite superglide hitch in April and while I really like the hitch I am having problems with rust on places where the hitch has lost some of its paint. I would appreciate advice on how to prep and paint the hitch. Would the hitch hold up better against rust if I kept it covered? Thanks in advance for the advice.

Air compressor question

Hello, I have recently purchased a Porter Cable 150# air compressor for the 5er. I used it to air the tires on my truck this weekend for the first time. What I saw was that the amount of air going into the tires decreased, considerably, as the pressure got higher. What I mean by that is that at first the air was going into the tire pretty fast then slowed down as I got closer to the desired pressure of 70#. When I got near the 70# mark the output of the compressor tank had gotten very slow. If the amount of air going into the tire slowed down this much I am concerned over how slow it will go when airing up the 5er tires (110#) Is this normal for air compressors? Thanks in advance for the advice.

RE: Jayco Designer

highfive, We have a Designer 34RLQS that we bought new in April 08. We could not be more pleased with the unit. The Jayco service (not the dealer) is beyond compare. Nothing but good things to say about Jayco. Charlie

RE: Propane connection question

javaseuf I need to find out the specifics of how you made this modification. I contacted Weber but they don't want to give any advice. Please describe exactly how you did this modification. Thanks

RE: Surge protector monitor install

USA, Thanks for the reply. We have a Jayco 34RLQS so I think the install should be about the same. Overall did you have any problems getting the unit or monitor to fit into the trailer? Thanks again.

Surge protector monitor install

Hello, I am in the process of purchasing a Progressive 50amp surge protector for our Jayco 5th wheel. I would like to know the best place to install the unit and the best place to install the monitor. Thanks for taking time to reply.

Propane connection question

Hello, We have an 08 Jayco 5th wheel that has a propane outlet at the rear of the trailer for connecting a BBQ grill. We have purchased a Weber Q100 grill that I would like to connect to this outlet. It is my understanding that the Weber is regulated for high pressure propane. I called Jayco and they said the trailer outlet connects to the propane system after the main tanks regulator which I assume means the grill outlet would be low pressure. Now my question, what hardware do I need to get high pressure propane to the Weber? Am I correct in thinking I don't need to do anything to the Weber since it is designed for high pressure? Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Surge protector in Jayco 5er

Hello, We have a 2008 Jayco 34RLQS and want to add a hard wired surge protector. Leaning towards a Progressive Industries unit with display. My RV tech said he did not know if the unit will fit in the trailer. Have any of you installed this type of supressor in your Jayco 5er? Thanks

RE: Designer 35RLTS and Jayco Talk...Thanks Frank!!

I have a question about using a Baby Weber 100 BBQ. We have a 2008 Jayco 34RLQS which has a propane outlet in the rear of the unit that ties into the forward propane tanks. Using this outlet would prevent the need to use disposable bottles or auxiliary a auxiliary tank for the BBQ. Now my question. Can I hook my Weber to this outlet? The outlet has a quick disconnect coupling. What type of hose and connections will I need to go between the Weber and the trailer outlet? I have researched this subject and am confused. Seems there are high and low pressure propane hoses. Which do I need? Will it be a problem getting a connector to go between the Weber and the hose? Any information you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

RE: Brake controller-is it working?

Malibooty, I have been following your replys to this thread and am a bit confused. When you say "You do have to connect the 12V trailer power plug and (wire is between the fuse box and the fender - connect it to the right stud in front of the fuse box (you'll have to supply the nut and the fuse)" are you saying that when the trailer dealer installs the trailer wiring they should make this connection? If you have power to the trailer lights would this mean the connection has been made? Thanks

Brake controller-is it working?

Hello, I don't want to seem dumb but how can I tell if my brake controller is working? We have a 38' Jayco 5th wheel that I pull with an 08 Chevy Duramax that has a built in brake conroller. The trailer dealer set the controller to 3.5 and said that was the correct setting. When I am stopping I really can't tell if the controller is helping or not. The conroller has a slide that you can use to manually adjust the gain. It was my understanding that if you move the slide all the way it would lock your trailer wheels. Mine won't do that. That makes me wonder if the controller is working at all. I took the truck to the dealer to have it checked and they said it was working. I took the trailer to the trailer dealer and they said it was set correctly. I have zero confidence in the trailer dealer so I don't put any faith in his comment. I have set the gain all the way from 3.5 to 5.5 and I can't see any difference but maybe I don't know what I am looking for. We are new RV'ers so we need advice. Thanks in advance for taking time to reply.
